CSR Report

At SNCF, we’re making the world a better place—through mobility, our commitment to the environment, a sense of community and socially responsible hiring. And we’re using change as an opportunity to build a rail system that’s more useful and sustainable for everyone.

DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY FOR ALL

SAFETY

At SNCF, we’re committed to safety—for everyone and everything aboard our trains and in our stations. We also believe in prevention, so we’ve launched youth outreach programmes that prevent incivility, promote mediation aboard our trains and in our stations, and send SNCF employees to speak in classrooms in underprivileged neighbourhoods. Success: in 2013 acts of vandalism against property were down 15%.

SATISFACTION

Customer satisfaction is the core of SNCF’s Excellence 2020 plan. We’ve launched a range of projects to improve on-time performance for commuters, make fares easier to understand, and make the rail system more accessible for all. These include a highly coordinated programme to introduce gradual improvements to our stations and trains, and develop services for people with disabilities.

Door-  to-door

Under our Excellence 2020 plan, we're striving to offer users connected travel from the beginning of their journey to the end. That means designing stations that act as true multimodal hubs, and developing door-to-door solutions that combine rail with complementary transport modes and incorporate innovative services like our Tranquilien mobile app.

New  mobilities

At SNCF, we’re meeting today’s environmental challenges with simple, sustainable new mobilities. Our passenger offer now incorporates eco-friendly, shared solutions like bicycles, car-sharing, carpooling, and urban public transport systems, and we’re reducing environmental impact for our freight customers with long trains and rail motorways that combine road and rail transport.

REDUCING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Close

Environmental  management

At SNCF, we’re reducing the environmental impact of our operations with new employee training programme and Group-wide use of EMS and ISO 14001, our certified environmental management tools. By year-end 2015, every SNCF EPIC (state-owned industrial and commercial enterprise) facility will have an Environmental Management System, and we’re making progress on treating storm water, reducing noise pollution, and conserving resources.

CO2

Under our environmental commitments and the ten-year action plan we adopted in 2012, we have pledged to reduce consumption, make our supply chains secure, and control our greenhouse gas emissions. And we’re meeting these goals through research, innovation and reduced consumption aboard our trains and in our facilities.

Circular  economy

In a circular economy, goods and services are produced with less waste and lower consumption of water, energy and raw materials. At SNCF, we’re working towards these goals by setting specific targets, such as cutting the amount of pesticide we use on our tracks in half by 2018.

Working towards a better world

Diversity

At SNCF, we’re taking our pro-diversity policies to a whole new level, with just one goal—“Making a difference through diversity”. That means fighting discrimination, promoting gender diversity and equality, making it easier for candidates from disadvantaged areas to find jobs, and hiring more workers with disabilities, more young people and more seniors.

Quality of life  in the workplace

Employee commitment and good quality of life in the workplace are critical to our performance, and we’re working to improve them both. To increase employee satisfaction, for example, we’ve launched a variety of programmes that promote health and wellbeing by keeping employees safe, providing support to managers, preventing work-related stress and reducing conflict at work.

Employability

At SNCF, increasing the satisfaction and commitment of our employees means supporting their career development. To do that, we’ve created training programmes for everyone, and we actively promote career mobility for our employees. And with 3,000 work-study agreements a year, we’re also making young people more employable.

Lending  a helping hand

Under SNCF purchasing policy, companies that hire workers with disabilities and the long-term unemployed are included in calls for tender, and we plan to increase socially responsible purchasing to €50 million in 2017. We also promote and deploy employment initiatives to fight homelessness and help get people on the margins of society back into the mainstream for the long term.

Local  economies

SNCF plays an important role in regional economic development, both as an employer and as a buyer. To take our commitment even further, we launched SNCF Développement, a subsidiary designed especially to support regional economies. We’re also helping local youth enter the workforce through a variety of other initiatives, including Equal Opportunity Week and the partnership between our subsidiary Geodis and the French National Council of Businesses for Underprivileged Areas (CNEB).
