More than 40 picturesque trains still run between the sky and coast or along the side of a volcano. Climb aboard, tell your story and win...
Why not try a bit of tourism... railway-style?
TER or Corail Intercités run over 40 tourist trains, each quite different, that take you through breathtaking landscapes. Don't miss the Ligne des Hirondelles [Swallow Line] which swoops from viaduct to viaduct over the Franche-Comté region. In the Pyrenees, the Train Jaune [Yellow Train] glides 80m above the void, climbs to 1,200 m, then drops down into the Têt valley, a bit like a roller coaster, but with superb landscapes too. Departing from Marseille, you have a choice:
The Train de la Côte Bleue [Blue Coast Train] takes you above the sea and the rocky inlets known as Calanques. Keep your eyes open and you might spot the villa of a celebrity and even perhaps dolphins... Or if you would rather save the Mediterranean, the Train de la Posidonie [Seagrass train] introduces you to marine eco-tourism.
New this summer
11 new trains were introduced for the 2007 summer season.
Holidaymakers were taken back in time on the Ligne des Horlogers through watch-making country in Besançon, or in the footsteps of Pagnol on the Train du Garlaban. The more high-tech minded tried the Escapade Ferroviaire in Ardenne, with 'audio-train' headphones over their ears, or listened to the history of Corsica on an MP3 player with Corsican Railways. Some even enjoyed a preview of the BAMGI system on board the Mont-Blanc Express at Chamonix. Thanks to its integrated GPS, this hand-held interactive multimedia PDA automatically provides audio commentaries, photos and videos related to the place you are travelling through!
