Our new high-speed train delivers improved aerodynamics and 97% recyclability—and it can tailor its power use to the number of passengers aboard. Thanks to these innovations, the TGV M will consume 20% less energy than today’s models, and its carbon footprint will be 37% smaller.

The energy-efficient TGV M is packed with cutting-edge features. Fully modular and 100% connected, this eco-friendly high-speed model was designed by top experts at Voyages SNCF and Alstom. Commercial service is set to begin in 2024.

New train, new look

The first completed power car for the TGV M was unveiled at Alstom’s Belfort workshops on 26 May. With its sleek, streamlined design, this revolutionary new train will boost passenger capacity even as it reduces acquisition and maintenance costs.

The TGV M is expected to consume around 20% less energy than today’s TGVs, thanks to eco-driving, a more aerodynamic nose design, and a regenerative braking system that returns power to the catenary.

Our 4ᵗʰ generation TGV—a revolution for every passenger

You’ll enjoy the benefits of the new TGV M whether you travel with TGV INOUI or OUIGO. Major innovations include:

  • Unprecedented modularity. The number of coaches can range from 7 to 9, and 1st-class coaches can be converted to 2nd. The interior can also be reconfigured to accommodate more (or fewer) seats, bike racks, extra luggage and more.
  • 20% more onboard space. This raises the maximum number of seats from 600 to 740.
  • Ultra-competitive energy efficiency and carbon footprint per journey. Some 97% of trainset components are recyclable, giving the TGV M the smallest carbon footprint on the market.
  • Connected services that can evolve with passenger needs. These include on-board WiFi and comprehensive, real-time information accessible throughout the train. And the same connectivity allows for preventive maintenance by transmitting real-time data on the TGV M’s components.
  • Accessibility to every area of the train for all passengers. This is the first TGV to be designed in close collaboration with wheelchair user groups from the very beginning. The TGV M will also be the first to offer fully independent boarding.

100 trainsets for nearly €3bn

In July 2018, we placed a firm order with Alstom for 100 trainsets worth nearly €3 billion. In July 2020, we inaugurated the TGV M’s body shell at Alstom’s factory in La Rochelle, kicking off a historic innovation partnership with the French train manufacturer. The TGV M will roll out over a 10-year period, with the first trainsets entering commercial service in 2024.
