CASE STUDY

France’s first HEQ-certified train stations

The Rhine-Rhone TGV line passes through two new stations at Besançon Franche-Comté and Belfort-Montbéliard. In both cases, SNCF-AREP wanted to show how nature and technology can work together. The Besançon station features a stonework exterior and ground-air heat exchangers, and is partially underground for energy efficiency. While the Belfort-Montbéliard station’s metal and timber features echo the region’s traditional crafts, its geothermal heating and rainwater recycling systems are pure state of the art. Both buildings have won High Environmental Quality certification.
