Iris 320:
the fast track to safety

The Iris 320 train lab keeps France’s TGV network reliable and safe by checking vital signs at high speed. Now SNCF’s infrastructure division is making its unique expertise available to other networks in Europe.


A FINGER
ON THE PULSE

With 150 sensors, 20 cameras and 20 km of onboard optical fibre, Iris 320 slips into traffic at 320 km/h and checks the rail system’s many parameters. It gathers data on track condition, signalling, catenaries, telecommunications and more, analyses them in real time and transmits conclusions to maintenance crews, who schedule work as needed.


BORDER CROSSING

Infrabel, Belgium’s railway infrastructure manager, turned to SNCF to monitor the LGV Nord high-speed line from Brussels to the Belgian border. Iris 320 gathers data on accelerations (key to traffic safety and passenger comfort), track geometry under load, pantograph-contact wire interactions, and GSM telecommunications.
