World’s biggest metro system

Dubai’s fully-automated metro system—two lines, 75 km of track and 47 stations—presented a range of engineering challenges. Systra beat top international rivals to win the contract in 2003, and then supported every step of the project, preparing feasibility and preliminary studies, drawing up tender documents in 2005, and later acting as overall prime contractor. The first line, which now carries 30 million passengers a year, opened in 2009, followed by the second line in September 2011.
