Making Villefranche-sur-Saône
station safer

To fight rising delinquency at the Villefranche-sur-Saône station, north of Lyon, SNCF joined forces with the local Council on Security and Crime Prevention (CLSPD)—with impressive results.

FIGHTING
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR

The station in Villefranche-sur-Saône had seen repeated incidents of incivility, and track crossing and other dangerous practices had become commonplace. SNCF stepped up security patrols and posted a night guard, to no avail. In an effort to overcome the problem, we joined a working group dedicated to this issue in the local CLSPD.

BROAD, TARGETED APPROACH

The resulting action plan was designed specifically to reach young people. Talks were organized at local schools and social centres to make youngsters aware of the risk of serious accidents and the importance of civil behaviour on public transport. A photo hunt motivated many to snap risky behaviours, and meetings with fire-fighters, the municipal police force and station employees allowed all sides to be heard and explain their viewpoints. Posters and announcements on trains and in stations helped drive the messages home. Thanks in large measure to increased awareness, incivility and vandalism at Villefranche-sur-Saône station have fallen by 50%.
